network and intended as an introductory guide to Zeus, in ancient
Greek mythology the ruler or king of the gods and goddesses of
Mount Olympus.
The character of Zeus represents a bridge between the truly ancient
religions of Greece and the Olympian gods and goddesses whose
names are well known today, and who date from the Dorian and classical
period of Greek history.
Zeus is the most famous of the Greek Olympian gods and in ancient
mythology was the son to Kronos and Rea. His father Kronos ( Chronos
/ Xronos ) had previously devoured their five other children after
birth out of fear of a phropecy foretelling that his child would
overthrow and become victorious over him. Zeus only escaped the
same fate because his mother fooled Kronos into eating a rock
wrapped up in blankets instead.
The name Zeus, meaning the sky, gives clue to his other title
of god, ruler or lord of the sky and his birthplace was reputed
to be the Dikteon Cave, located in the centre of Crete.
Zeus did indeed ultimately defeat his father and forced him to
regurgitate his siblings, by this time all adults. These brothers
and sisters - Hades, Hera, Hestia, Demeter and Poseidon - then
came to his side in the battle against the Titans and the old
